  1. 1934-1976. West German urban guerrilla,
  2. member of the Baader-Meinhof gang in the
  3. 1970s. A left-wing journalist, Meinhof was
  4. converted to the use of violence to achieve
  5. political change by the imprisoned Andreas
  6. Baader. She helped free Baader and they
  7. became joint leaders of the urban guerrilla
  8. organization the Red Army Faction. As the
  9. faction's chief ideologist, Meinhof was
  10. arrested in 1972 and, in 1974, sentenced to
  11. eight years' imprisonment. She committed
  12. suicide in 1976 in the Stammheim
  13. high-security prison.
